Call for Artists - Huginn & Muninn comic team

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 5, 2010, 4:46 AM

The time has come again to put together the team for a new comic book. I can only hope that I get half as lucky with my next project, as I did for the team on The Deathlings. Working with *ManuelaSoriani, ~MichelaDaSacco, *jurithedreamer, *cobotenuss, and *MischievousMartian has been amazing, and I know my team is way out of my league.

(It would be a big favor to me if you could visit This Article and mark it as a favorite (the heart button) to help spread the word!)

I'm excited to announce that my next project is Huginn & Muninn...

(Pin-up by *roxaralu)

Legend has it that Odin's ravens, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory) are sent out each day or night to circle the world, and bring information back to Odin. This is a big part of how he gains advantage against others, and has been the case since ancient days. It continues into the present day.

In our story, this will often mean something different from what the legends suggest. Every night, they each possess one person somewhere in the world-- our world. Huginn uses the thoughts (intelligence and some personality) of the person possessed, while Muninn gains the memory of those he inhabits.

The two are being sent out seemingly at random into today's world, and to somewhere apparently still tied to the past of the Norse peoples. They need to discover something, which may shed light a secret problem that Odin himself appears to be having. Other Norse gods and heroes have adapted to the modern world in unexpected ways.

I will be writing this series, based on stories I have been telling in my photography and other media for years now. The covers will be by Yasmine Putri (*MischievousMartian) with variant covers by the interior artists.

Art Style Notes

FORMAT: Larger mini-series or first chapter of an ongoing
CONTENT: Dark urban fantasy, sometimes sexy, with Viking-era elements
STYLE SHORTHAND: Inspired by Gianfelice and/or Manara
KEY ELEMENTS: Grungy grimy gore, gorgeous girls, glorious gods (good likenesses a bonus)
TEAM STRUCTURE: Flexible. Probably using the standard Penciller, Inker, Colorist, Covers, Letterer.

This series is intended to have a grungy but sensual art style, spanning different time periods and settings. The titular characters can appear in many guises, but in this chapter these often include beautiful women. Be creative with your style, don't feel constrained by these guidelines if you have a gorgeous take on the concept.

Roles Available

Line Art (Pencils and Inks): The line artist needs to have the right style, which draws from crime, urban fantasy, and viking genres-- and also be capable of good sequential storytelling. The tryout consists of drawing three character design pages, and then a sequential page if necessary. (Contact me for a link with the full details.)

Color Art: If you are a colorist, please contact me for more information. I will need to see some of your work coloring other people's art, and your work coloring comics pages. Your try-out will begin once line art is available from the final line art team, but I'm happy to talk further before then.

Letterer: I'm always looking for someone who is a better letterer than I am, for this project and other books. If you're interested, send me some portfolio work (a link is fine) and I may have you try out on a couple of my existing pages. Traditional and digital pencillers are both welcome, but digital is preferred due to our process.

Pin-up: If you are interested in doing semi-official pinup art, variant covers, fan-art, character portraits, etc. you are very welcome to do so. I can recumbent a specific image as a basis for your work, or you can come up with your own take on the concept based on notes I can provide. If you'd like me to suggest an image concept, just let me know.

Design: I'm also always looking for a web designer and/or logo designer. Most of the details on this page don't apply, but please drop me a line if you'd like to be involved.

Publication & Payment

Unfortunately, this project doesn't yet have a publisher or a budget. In order to pitch this to publishers, we will be completing at least 10 pages of the 22-page first issue. Once this is done, I will pitch to various publishing companies.

We will only begin serious work on Issue 1 once the entire team is together. (I prefer not to write final drafts of a script until I know who I am writing for.) Ideally, we would begin work in December or January, and will need to have the 10 pages ready by March 1st so we can promote and pitch the book during the summer convention season.

Drop Me a Line

If you are interested in working on this project, please contact me. I have a page of information ready with all of the other details you are likely to need to try-out, consider the project, etc. I am also more than happy to answer any questions.

UPDATE 12/22/2009: Boston-area shops now carrying Issue 0

If you live in or near Boston, there is now a much easier (and cheaper) way to get a copy of Issue 0. The official launch date is December 30th for Indy Comic Book Week, but if you happen to go to any of the following comic shops, you should see it on shelves now! I will update as more shops are added.

Comicazi - Davis Square Somerville, MA (red line)
Comicopia - Kenmore Square Boston, MA (green line)
Hub Comics - Union Square Somerville, MA
New England Comics - Harvard Square Cambridge, MA (red line)

One great thing about setting this up was discovering some great shops. Every one of these shops has a good local comics section, and most of them have a great selection of other Indies and small-press comics. They were also all very nice about getting our book on the shelves in time for Indy Comic Book week.

The biggest shout-out goes to Comicazi, and the owner Mike. He has a large supply of issues, and has been plugging the book in his newsletter, etc. It's a great shop, and I'm still happy to trek out to Davis even though we don't live near there anymore.

Audio Interview with Me!

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 17, 2009, 9:38 AM

A while back, I was interviewed for the Photographer and Model podcast. The last month has been so crazy, that I almost forgot it was coming out soon. Luckily, Ron reminded me that the podcast is live now.

I don't dare listen to it myself, in case I sound like an idiot. Can you do me a favor and give it a listen, and tell me gently how bad I am? (The interviewers are great, so there's bound to be a silver lining.)

You can check it out here: [link]

(In all seriousness, please give it a listen!)

The deadline is almost here to enter our first official Deathlings fan art contest! Entries close after December 15th, 2009-- which is TODAY! (Where does the time go?!) If you want to enter, submit something before midnight!

For the details of the contest, visit This Article, or drop me a comment with any questions. If you need more info, I can send you a semi-secret "Artist Info" link.

The winner gets a DA premium membership, a copy of Issue 0, and lots of glory! The winner and our favorite runners-up will all get featured in an article, journal entries, and on our websites.

We have some great entries so far, but I'd really love to see more!

Professional comics artists. and members of the Deathlings art team, are excluded from the contest, but are always welcome to contribute sketches and pinup art. (Basically, that means an automatic "honorable mention" and hopefully future collaborations.)

Various Updates - Comics and Photos

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 7, 2009, 4:52 AM

Photography

As you may have seen, I have some recent photos of ~P-X-E and *PlastikStars as well as a few even more recent ones of *theadacat. There are more of both of those to come, when I have some time free to post them.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, I missed another chance to work with Mia. However, next weekend I have a cosplay shoot that I'm really excited about, with a new model. That should mean some really different stuff from me. Imagine my usual work, but not nude, and featuring X-23, Psylocke, and the Baroness.

The Deathlings - Previews

The Deathlings preview webcomic is still updating every Tuesday and Thursday on The Official Deathlings website. Don't forget to check it out every week, and tell your friends!

You can also follow me on Twitter, join the other 113 fans of The Deathlings on our official Facebook fan page, and check out the artists here on DeviantArt: *ManuelaSoriani, ~MichelaDaSacco, *jurithedreamer, *cobotenuss

UPDATE: The last page of Issue 0 is now up, including the big reveal at the end of Anne's dream. (Is it showing the end of her dream, or what comes next?) We'll be continuing with the early pages of Issue 1, after a quick break to show some bonus artwork including character art, and pencilled pages from later in the issue.

Huginn & Muninn - Artists Wanted

I've been quiet for a while about the art team for my next comic, because it looked like someone was lined up. Now, it doesn't appear that he will have time because of a bigger project, so try-outs are once again happening. If you are interested, read the article at [link] and then drop me a note for more details!

We are looking for a line-artist, colorist, and possibly a letterer.

UPDATE: Anyone is welcome to try out for this, from the newest of the newbies, to pros who find themselves with the time to take a chance on a project like this. Even if you aren't sure you're ready for it, it will still be good practice.

The Deathlings - Official Fan Art Contest

We have already had a few great entries, but I hope that more people will be joining our fan art contest. For the details, including the prizes, check out the article at [link] and let me know if you have questions!

UPDATE: The deadline is December 15th, so if you want to enter you should get started soon! We have a few entries so far, but I'd like to see more!

The Deathlings: Anne's Story Issue #0 (Indie Comic Book Week Edition)

Finally, some cool news... The print edition of Issue #0 is on its way to the printers now. We should have copies available (directly, and in local Boston area comic shops) in time for Indie Comic Book Week on December 30th. It includes the full color version of Issue #0, plus five inked and lettered pages from Issue #1, plus Reuben Negron's cover to Issue #1 and Yasmine Putri's variant cover for Issue #0.

Drop me a note if you would like to order a copy for $3.00 including shipping (to the US & Canada)!
