Artist's Comments

This strikes me as a risky move, but I think it's worth it. Here is my most well known photograph here on DeviantArt, as a before and after. This shows the evolution, from my original RAW image directly off the camera unmodified, to the final image.

Best case scenario, this will make people think I am talented with Photoshop. Worst case, it removed the mystery, and makes people think I'm not a fantastic photographer. Somewhere in between, people won't care at all. Still seems worth showing people.

For the actual deviation, go here: "Pour" from Lethe

I think it's really cool to see the before and after. I actually like both versions a lot. I'm definitely not in the "won't care at all" camp. I'm more in the "that's friggin' cool" camp.

Photography is about using your equipment to capture what you want people to see/feel. Photoshop and all other postprocessing is an equipment as well, and while composing the shot, model, and lighting is artistic even more artistic feel is put in during processing. Your camera, strobes, etc is as much a peice of equipment as is photoshop and other tools if that wasn't the case than it just comes down to the camera itself and the shot. But there is IMO more to it than that, sometimes you have to process to get the right feel you want.

i like seeing what you have done i think what you did to the skin tone of the model is very intresting but i think its a shame you lost the colour of the the models hair as its really striking on the origonal

One thing I try to avoid is too much spot-changing. I like to change things across the board, in terms of colors and histogram, rather than touch up individual areas much. Part of this is that if I try to modify the hair color and skin color separately, I could end up with a jarring or unnatural result. With such cool tones elsewhere, making the hair too warm would be odd.
