For Your Consideration

Some of my best work. If you enjoyed a photo you saw recently in my gallery, I hope you will also love everything in this small collection.

the Deathlings

In July 2009, I began writing a graphic novel based on stories I have been working on for over a decade.

Say hello to Anne, and the Deathlings... This gallery features photos by me of Anne, as well as some early Deathlings photos from my gallery, plus character art by the interior art team, *ManuelaSoriani and ~MichelaDaSacco. More to come, including covers by *cobotenuss.

Queen of Night

March 15th, 2009
Featuring: Kaitlyn Cross - ~KaitlynxCross

I'm very pleased to introduce Kaitlyn Cross. How many ways can I say it? I'm just so happy with this photo.

I'm comfortable saying this is my favourite work of the last year. If you're thinking of promoting me, or featuring me in any way, this is the one image I'm not ashamed to ask for help spreading around.

X - First Book by Ian X.

This collection shows the photos selected for my first book. To see a cool preview, or buy the book, visit this page.

Price - $50.00

Crow Witch - Ayame

This is the photograph I am consistently most proud of, out of all of my eight years of photography. Thanks so much to Ayame for being an amazing model, and to Lady Luck for how well this one came out.

Newest

Here are the latest works I have posted.

My DDs

My Daily Deviations so far in my time on DeviantArt.

The first is thanks to ^opioid and was given on my first night adding images to DA. I was uploading, and saw all the comments, and didn't realize right away what was happening.

The second is thank to `Helewidis and is special to me, because it's a photo about my photography, which makes it not only very "Meta" but also very personal.

The third comes as a total shock. It isn't my favourite image, but I'm proud of the variety it shows in my portfolio. Thanks to ^opioid for surprising the crap out of me.

The fourth isn't really my DD, but this seemed like the best place to mention it. At my suggestion, ^RockstarVanity awarded a DD to *theadacat for an image we created together.

Critiques

by =CarpeSav

This may be one of the best works, in a great gallery. This captures your beauty, but also has a very personal and real feel-- the view...

Summary: A strong composition, great colours, but held back by a flat feeling to the lighting. First of all, the colour and compositio...

There's a lot great to say about this image. The impact was clear as soon as I saw the thumbnail. The composition, the concept, th...

I love the new critique system, and have found the time to make use of it a few times for some works that caught my attention. I tend to focus on works deserving of great praise, but where I see tangible ways they could be improved upon. I hope I don't seem to diminish excellence by measuring its distance from genius.

Recent Best

These are some works that I want to spotlight as standing out among my most recent works.

My DD Suggestions

A few of the images which I have nominated, that were chosen as Daily Deviations. (There have been quite a few, all listed in this collection.)

Project Self-Estememe

All of the images in this collection have come out of Project: Self-Estememe. This is an ongoing project to encourage better self-esteem through glamour self-portraits.

You may recognize these images, but the copies here were posted by the models, not by me. Go check out their lovely galleries!

In Need of a Favor + FanArt Contest!

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 16, 2009, 6:45 AM

This post is a bit of a Catch-22. The problem is that I am horrible at asking for favors-- I just can't stand to ask people to do anything for me-- but the solution is to ask for a favor. It'll make sense in a second.

I have created something that I am very very proud of, mostly thanks to the hard work of *ManuelaSoriani, *MichelaDaSacco, *jurithedreamer, *cobotenuss, and *MischievousMartian. It's good, and their work on it is simply great.

So now, in order for us to take it to the next level, we need people to see it. We very much want to build a fanbase for our comic, before we even have a publisher. It's a very competitive world, and a book that already has passionate fans will stand out.

With that in mind, we have created five extra pages of our comic book to be available on the web, as a preview. (The preview will continue with pages from the first issue, as well.) So, as of recently, we actually have a "product" to "market".

Here's where I could use your help... We want to get the word out. Any assistance would be huge. Here are just a few suggestions, but we're very much open to other ideas:

- Link to The Deathlings website in your journal.
- Recommend places where we can submit the webcomic to directories, lists, etc.
- Put a banner linking to the website on your web page, blog, etc.
- Write a DA article or journal about the Deathlings, our team, or something related
- Spread the word to your friends, fans, customers, etc. somehow
- Nominate one of the artists for a DD for their work on the book
- Post here with suggestions on how we can market this webcomic without feeling scummy
- Show the comic to even one person you think would like it
- Create a Stamp for The Deathlings
- Follow @ian_x, @anneisdead, and/or @deathling on Twitter (and spread the word)
- Join the Deathlings Fan Page on Facebook (and spread the word)
- Contribute to the Official Deathlings Fan-Art Contest!

You get the idea. I hate asking for help, but now is a time when we really need it, if we are to get this book off the ground. Until we find a publisher, a group of incredibly talented artists are practically working for free to make this happen-- I don't want to let them down.

UPDATES WITH RESULTS:

As a thank you to people making suggestions, I'll be posting ideas and contributions that stand out right here. Thanks everyone!

Please let me know if you have linked us, spread the word, or helped out in any other way, so I can thank you here!

Ian X. is a self-taught fine art portrait photographer, who began his work at the turn of the Millenium while a student in the United Kingdom. He studied Philosophy at Reed College in Oregon, the University of St Andrews in Scotland, and the University of Sheffield in England. Born in New Hampshire, he now works out of a studio in Lawrence, MA and resides in Malden, MA.

When asked to describe his work, Ian responds, "I mostly take strange portraits of beautiful girls, or maybe it's the other way 'round. My constant themes have been contrast (both visual and conceptual), beauty, darkness, personality, and the unnatural or supernatural. The same character, whether it's the subject herself or a fictional creation, should be seen as both powerful and vulnerable-- either predator or prey-- within an instant."

I also consider paid shoots, for characters, personal glamour shots, self-promotion, and the like. I have worked photographing fashion designs, jewelry, medieval garb, musicians, and more. If you're looking for attractive photos of yourself, my style will guarantee distinctive results. For more information, visit [link]

On July 22nd, 2009, Ian began writing his first graphic novel, "The Deathlings". The comic is now inproduction, with line art by *ManuelaSoriani and ~MichelaDaSacco, and covers by *cobotenuss. A preview issue will be available late 2009, and we are currently looking for a publisher.
